History of Okehampton Golf Club

Sydney Simmons opens the course by driving from the 1st tee

The Early Years

The golf course was founded in 1913 and designed by 5 time open champion JH Taylor who initially opened up a nine hole course.

The course was extended in 1923 to 18 holes with TAYLOR and Alex HERD (Open champion in 1903) played a match in the morning followed by a medal in the afternoon.

Moore's Marathon

On Sunday 25th June at 4.15am in 1972, Okehampton Golf Club Member, Micheal Moore began a record breaking round of golf.

He completed his days golf at 9pm, playing 15 rounds and 6 holes in continuous play - walking about 50 miles. He was assisted by a number of members who acted as caddies and he raised at least £150 for the town and club.

His achievement, along with others are recorded on the clubs honours board which hangs in the Clubhouse.
