Welcome to the Okehampton Golf Club Senior’s Section. If you are a member of the Club and your are aged 55 or over you are entitled to join the Senior’s Section. In 2017 you can join for a fee of £5 and the above officers form the sections committee. For this fee you are entitled to enter our Monday Competitions, play in our friendly matches and also, if you are over 60 years of age, get automatic membership of the Devon Men’s Veterans Golf Association (DMVGA). This enables you to play in the Emerton Court, if selected, which is an Inter-Club knock-out competition open to all Clubs in Devon. It is fair to say that this is more competitive than our friendly matches! You will also get to play in the Millennium Competition (see below for details). Finally, and not least, every December there will be a Christmas Lunch following the Doug Cooper Trophy Competition on 4th December.
Monday Competitions: Every Monday the Seniors Captain organises weekly competitions. Please see the fixture list on the Senior’s noticeboard for details. On one or two Mondays each month there will be drawn games, the draw taking place at 8.45am. All you have to do is put your name up on the list on the Board, or register your name on the day before the draw takes place. If you cannot get to the club by 8.45 am you can be accommodated with a later tee time. On other Mondays there will be medal or stableford qualifying games, or team competitions where there will be time sheets on the notice board with times ranging from between 8.30 and 10.00am. Just put your name on the sheet if you wish to play, or turn up in time to arrange playing partners in the clubhouse before playing. Also on most Thursday mornings there is an informal senior’s roll-up where the draw is made at 8.30am.
Friendly Matches: Every year we have a number of friendly matches against other clubs in Devon and Cornwall. In 2017 we have 22 matches and there is also a highly competitive match against the Ladies section (Friday October 13th). Please see the fixture list on the noticeboard for details. For the inter-club matches each club normally selects a team of six pairs with each pair playing against their opponents in handicap match play formation, both home and away. These matches are indeed friendly and played in good spirit, with a post-match meal which all are expected to attend. It s customary for the home team to buy the drinks for their opponents, to be reciprocated in the corresponding away fixture. As far a possible the team plays in club colours, blue shorts/trousers and jumpers and white shirts, and jacket and tie for the post-match meal. Sheets for these matches are displayed on the noticeboard where you can put your name up for selection. Each match has a match manager, appointed by the captain, who is responsible for selection and all the necessary arrangements.
The Emerton Court: This is an inter-club competition open to all clubs affiliated to the DMVGA, taken rather more seriously than the friendly matches. In 2015 we reached the quarter finals where we lost to Tiverton, but in 2016 we lost to Elfordleigh in the second round. The format is match play home and away with a team of five pairs, age 60+. A complimentary practice round on the opponent’s course is customary.
Competition and special events: Throughout the season there are a number of individual cups to be won in Club competitions, and one or two outside events to which we are invited. These include:
The Millenium Trophy – Clubs affiliated to the DMVGA are invited to enter teams of three to play in a stableford format with all three scores to count. The team must consist of one player from each of three handicap categories 0-14, 15-20, 21-28.
The Memorial Cup – a Club Senior’s individual match play competition played over the season.
Other Club Trophies – the Pat Terry Cup (16 holes white tees stableford, May 22nd), the Frank Dann Trophies (medal best gross and best net scores, September 4th), the Doug Cooper Trophy (stableford shotgun followed by Christmas Dinner, December 4th), the Veteran’s Cup Order of Merit for the senior golfers with the best aggregate six scores out of the nine annual qualifying medal and stableford competitions, and the Senior’s Championship (medal June 12th).
The Stan Setter Trophy – a competition organised by Downes Crediton Golf Club in memory of former member Stan Setter. By invitation only for each club’s captain, vice captain and secretary.
Club Opens – There are three Okehampton Seniors Open competitions each year. In 2017 these are Spring Open Monday April 24th, Summer Open Monday July 17th, Autumn open Monday September 11th.
Captains Away Day – Every year the Senior’s Captain organises a Captain’s Away Day for fun prizes and food. This is open to all senior’s section members and will take place in 2017 on Monday 25th September.
